ITEN Tech Jobs & Skills Survey to measure skills needed in the area’s tech industry

(ST. LOUIS) April 25, support organization and catalyst 2018 – ITEN (www.itenstl.org), the St. Louis-based entrepreneurial for technology innovation, is spear-heading a community-wide effort to understand and plan for St. Louis’ future technology jobs and skills needs. ITEN has commissioned Peters Marketing Research to conduct a short online survey.

ITEN Vice Chairman Jim von der Heydt is leading the initiative along with Dr. Benjamin Akande, the former president of Westminster University who was recently named Senior Advisor to the Chancellor of Washington University.

“This research is designed to measure, for the first time, the core IT skills and talent needs across the business community in region,” von der Heydt said. “This will serve as an inventory of the current situation and outlook for the next few years. Armed with these insights, ITEN wants to lead a community-wide conversation how to fill the need.”

According to Kevin Farrell, Principal at Avison Young, “The most significant issue facing the St. Louis Region is lack of job growth.  Attracting new employers and enhancing the ability of existing companies to grow here is vital.  We are thrilled to be part of this innovative, crucial effort.”

Talent drives innovation and is critical to a robust tech start-up community in St. Louis.  Many core IT skills including big data management, programming and engineering are in demand.

“There is work to be done, but St. Louis can make incredible strides in cultivating fresh tech talent and tackling the skills gap,” said Jeff Mazur, Executive Director of LaunchCode, a nonprofit focused on building a skilled tech workforce. “At LaunchCode, we know that understanding the specific needs of employers is critical to building a blueprint for the future. We are excited to partner with ITEN on this survey and believe it will open an important, community-wide dialogue of which LaunchCode is proud to be part.”

It is difficult to know where to focus efforts without understanding current and future skills/talent gaps.  This ITEN Tech Jobs and Skills Research Study is designed to measure current and future skills and talent needs across the St. Louis region’s business community. Gateway to Innovation is deeply invested in the future of technology and jobs in the St. Louis region.  David Kocs, Gateway to Innovation Executive Committee member, believes “a community-wide effort is required to solve the technology demand within our region.  The results of this survey will help in focusing our efforts to address the gaps.”  Gateway to Innovation attracts over 1,600 Information Technology Professionals to their annual conference in St. Louis and has given over $1.4M to support technology scholarships and initiatives within the community.

The email survey will be sent to a targeted list of 3,500 individuals currently employed in technology leadership roles in the St. Louis region. Among those invited to take the survey will be hiring managers, workers and leaders in the local tech industry. Respondents will include individuals at both startups and established companies.

“It is critical that St. Louis has a measurable plan to address the technology demand of its current and prospective employers. This survey is the first step to making that plan a reality,” said Kristin Tucker, Principal of TDK Technologies.

This online survey takes only about 10 minutes, and, if you qualify, you will have an opportunity to enter the drawing for one of three $150 Amazon gift cards and receive a summary report of the results. ITEN expects to have a final report on the survey results published within the next eight to 10 weeks.

“The project is sponsored by Avison Young, TDK Technologies and Gateway to Innovation, comments Jim von der Heydt. “We would not be able to undertake a project like this without their help and the help of LaunchCode.”
