Off Campus Media (OCM) is an integrated marketing company that combines a unique campus-specific marketing approach with a robust online website strategy to better connect advertisers to the college student and "new consumer" marketplace. Advertisers seeking to reach the skeptical, fickle and tech-savvy group called "college students." 18 million strong and highly sought after because of its $237B in discretionary spending, college students truly represent the "new consumer." Often hard to reach through traditional media, the college demographic is a series of micro-cultures that vary across campuses and geographic regions in the country. OCM is developing a portfolio of web sites in partnership with national service organizations that address the purchasing decisions made by college students. Starting with MovingOffCampus.com, OCM has developed an apartment search tool specifically to help college students find apartments. In order to expand its geographic footprint, scale online and campus revenue, and increase the effectiveness of its campus marketing programs, OCM is expanding its website portfolio to address many more purchase decisions. Additional websites will focus on helping the college student demographic find a job, moving company, health insurance or just a place to grab a bite to eat (OffCampusMix.com). College student life is changing faster than ever, with technologies like Facebook and mobile phones only accelerating the growing divide. The "cookie cutter," traditional marketing campaigns of yesterday just aren't working anymore. College students have unique desires and needs so why are they treated like everyone else? College students want reviews from other students, apartments near campus and student specials and deals. OCM has developed a process for recruiting and working with Campus Ambassadors at college campuses to create and implement custom marketing campaigns on behalf of its clients. OCM offers search engine advertising and search engine optimization services. OCM's search engine marketing clients range from national health insurance companies to regional real estate developers and managers. Like SEM, OCM's social media marketing skills were honed through is Campus Marketing programs. OCM works with local and regional businesses to help develop more effective customer engagement strategies through social media and offers fully outsourced social media management solutions. Off Campus Media is a 2008 graduate of ITEN's Mock Angel Training program and has experienced considerable success in the past year and a half. The company was founded by CEO Mark Sawyier. Of further benefit to the company is Mark's father, Stephen Sawyier, a lawyer practicing in New York City, who is also an ITEN mentor.

Geek Night
lauched to Rave Reviews
What happens if you bring a bunch of smart strangers together with ideas centered around technology? That's what ITEN, Appistry, and Lambda Lounge wanted to find out when they hosted the first ever Geek Night on June 16, 2010. Contegix provided the pizza, and ITEN supplied the beer and soft drinks. Professionals with common interests in technology met in a relaxed environment: the J. Milton Turner Offices boiler room. The remodeled room includes amenities such as a TV, a giant chess set, a drum kit, foosball, and table shuffleboard. Michael Groner, one of the original Appistry co-founders, kicked off the meeting with the inspiring story of how Tsunami Research (now Appistry) was born out of a few friends gathering for informal "geek nights" hosted by Bob Lozano, the founder and original CEO of Appistry. Those geek nights were the inspiration for birth of the Geek Night event. Josh Jefferies and Tom Dopheide went over the rules of Geek Night and got things going for the idea sharing portion of the event. A number of attendees stood up and gave a 30 second pitch about a business idea they had, then the participants self-grouped around the ideas they found interesting. They expanded on the original ideas and got to know each other in the process. After half-time, participants could switch groups if they wanted. Finally, at the end of the event, the audience gave feedback on what worked and what didn't. Wild enthusiasm for the format and results, combined with a lot of great ideas on how to make the event better......Geek Night just might become a regular event. If you...
- Have an inkling of an idea, but need help in developing it further...
- Have a lot of ideas, but don't know which one to focus on...
- Want to be in a startup, but don't' have anyone to be on your team...
- Have skills in one area, but need people with skills in other areas...
- Want to help someone with their ideas...
...Geek Night is for you.
The first Geek Night was fully booked with 30 participants on the morning after it was announced. Due to the popularity of the event, the next venue will have a slightly larger capacity. Check out the ITEN Events page ( www.itenstl.org/events) for the schedule and to register for the next Geek Night meeting.

Innovate St. Louis Names New CEO
At the June board meeting of Innovate St. Louis, Barbara Brinkman was named the new CEO of Innovate St. Louis. Barbara replaces Frank Stokes who earlier announced his retirement. Frank steps down after leading Innovate since its inception in 2007, during which time Innovate St. Louis has grown to include the IT Coalition, ITEN, Sourcelink, and Venture Mentoring Service.
Barbara brings a lot of enthusiasm to her new challenge to advance the bi-state St. Louis region's rise as a national and international leader in entrepreneurship and innovation. Prior to Innovate, Barbara took an interim role as Development Director for the School District of Clayton. Her executive career includes the role of Vice President of Marketing for Macy's and Famous-Barr. Her experience is in financial planning and budgeting, database and relationship management, loyalty programs and development. At Macy's she spearheaded changes in media and market mix to improve the return on investment ROI by 96%. She has a thorough knowledge in developing and executing a brand strategy both internally and externally. Barbara also specializes in business process improvement utilizing technology and team collaboration. In addition she has direct experience navigating and excelling through mergers and acquisitions. Working with the American Red Cross she launched the national Ready Rating disaster recovery program with the City of Clayton. She is pursuing further education and will graduate in May 2011 in the Executive Masters of Business Administration EMBA program at Washington University. She also received her Bachelor's degree from Washington University.
Barbara is very excited about all of the opportunities for growth that are available for Innovate and has already taken an active interest in ITEN, including attending our Second Thursday networking session in June.

Innovate St. Louis is a 501c3 non-profit organization that was founded in 2007. The mission of innovate St. Louis is to make a significant difference in boosting
the level of innovation and entrepreneurship in the bi-state St. Louis region. These are important ingredients in maintaining a high quality of life. Innovate St. Louis is a momentum builder in this key area.
In 2008, ITEN became an operating entity within Innovate. (Other Innovate entities include the IT Coalition, STLSourcelink, and Venture Mentoring Service.) Although funding for ITEN came initially from the State of Missouri through the Missouri Technology Corporation (MTC), the majority of funding for ITEN since then has come through the fund-raising efforts of Innovate St. Louis and the IT Coalition. ITEN is a vehicle for fulfilling many of Innovate's objectives, and Innovate's financial backing continues to enable ITEN to grow and provide excellent support to early stage technology ventures.
For St. Louis to remain prosperous in a fast-changing global marketplace, it's no longer enough to be content with merely maintaining our status quo. We're competing with other regions for the best brains, the investment dollars, and the innovative businesses that will generate wealth for our region. This takes a continual renewal of our economic base. Success means making our region a stronger magnet that will both hold the assets we have and build a critical mass to attract such assets from elsewhere.
Innovate St. Louis is the only organization that looks at the entire region through the lens of entrepreneurship. There are many groups involved in supporting entrepreneurial activity, each with its own goals. Innovate has no desire to duplicate anything that already exists. Rather, it works to increase collaboration and starts new initiatives to strengthen the overall system in St. Louis for entrepreneurial support. Innovate works with partners on everything it undertakes.
In so doing, Innovate:
-
Boosts entrepreneurship and innovation throughout the bi-state region by encouraging and facilitating people and groups working together.
-
Works across the region to look at all stages of enterprise development -- from early ideas to ongoing growth -- encouraging entrepreneurial initiatives, ensuring there are resources to assist developing enterprises, and making the system for connecting entrepreneurs to the help they need more efficient and user friendly.
-
Strengthens the region's entrepreneurial infrastructure and networks.
-
Identifies and supports the development of additional industry coalitions that can be levers of growth.
Innovate has an active Board of Directors that consists of many of the region's top executives and is lead by Chairman Dr. William Peck, and has just named Barbara Brinkman as its new CEO (see the accompanying news article).

Innovate St. Louis ![]()

Mentor Spotlight
Dana Marshall is an ITEN mentor and a member of our Mock Angel Group. He's a serial entrepreneur and technology business executive, and the Managing Director at Warson Capital Partners, a St Louis based investment bank and private equity fund. In this role he works with technology and manufacturing companies to assemble the capital needed to fund growth and expansion.
Prior to joining Warson, Dana was CEO and Chairman of Applied Energetics Corporation, a publicly-traded developer of defense laser, optics, and high voltage electronics technologies, and supplier of advanced roadside bomb detection equipment for the US military. Dana has been involved in laser and electronics developments since the 1980s, and has extensive background in defense applications and markets. Dana is an import to St Louis, having relocated here to serve as a Strategic Planning Manager at General Dynamics Corporation, and was a program manager with McDonnell Douglas in the early 1990s before starting his own laser company, Cutting Edge Optronics, now a subsidiary of Northrop Grumman Corporation located in St Charles County. While building Cutting Edge, Dana was responsible for capital formation, raising in excess of $8 million to fund the company's advanced laser technologies. Dana sold Cutting Edge in 2000, and has since worked with several small business start ups, and as a senior executive with Zygo Corporation, a Connecticut-based optical instrument manufacturer. He is a laser industry consultant, and has served on several industry association, professional association, and corporate boards. " I've had a terrific experience working with the ITEN Mock Angels, and getting to see the exciting and creative businesses that are sprouting up in St Louis. The rapid revolution that is happening in software, communications, electronics, data manipulation and so many new digitally-driven businesses, is mind boggling. Every day we are seeing tremendous new growth opportunity for entrepreneurs, and I see the ITEN community as a vital element to capturing that opportunity for the region by connecting knowledgable people. "

Congratulations to New ITEN Mock Angel Graduate
ITEN is very happy to announce that we have just graduated the sixth company to successfully complete our Mock Angel Training Program. Aisle411 (www.aisle411.com) has successfully completed the program and has been added to the list of graduates on ITEN's Investor web page.
From our description of the Mock Angel Program: "Graduation from Mock Angel Training means it is the opinion of the ITEN Mock Angel mentors that the company has addressed all the big questions about their venture and have thought through their business challenges thoroughly enough to ask for other people's money."
Our congratulations go to the Aisle411 team. The Mock Angel Training is rigorous and intense, and graduates represent less than 5% of the ventures in our Network.
