DIMS PROVIDES INNOVATIVE SOLUTION FOR DEAD INVENTORY
Ballwin, MO, March 20, 2012 — Dead inventory, the billions of dollars wasted on unneeded or unwanted products sitting on shelves, is an ongoing problem for the $4 trillion manufacturing sector in the U.S.
This costly problem is one Brandon Twitty and Siva Pathmanathan, president and vice president of
Dead Inventory Management System LLC, respectively believe they have helped solve. Their innovation
generates a return on idle inventory by using an innovative, new technology to bring a network of buyers and
sellers together in the clouds.
The web-based platform, an online community portal in which sellers purchase a merchant profile and buyers sign up for free, allows companies to instantly post any item containing a manufacturer-placed, part-identifying barcode using specially programmed MC55 scanners. The “Dimventory” enables companies to showcase their dead inventory. A usually cumbersome process, items scanned using the DIMS device enable companies to put idle inventory on the internet in seconds. DIMS estimates its device can scan as many as 1000 items in a day.
The company hopes to build momentum through online advertising campaigns and by enticing manufacturing firms to sign on with DIMS to gain a significantly better return on their dead inventory or to earn preferred status, upon which their products will be listed first on pages organized by sectors and subsectors. Dimventory will also be searchable by product number and description.
Once transactions occur, buyers will be able to rate companies based on the quality of their inventory, speed of delivery and accuracy of product description. This rating, along with the frequency of uploads, will determine a seller’s ranking of preference.
In spite of the manufacturing industry’s efforts, sweeping changes made in inventory management in the past decade only helped some in the removal of dead inventory. Computerized inventory and ordering systems designed for better tracking and management of inventory on hand still allowed for a poor inventory to shipments ratio of greater than 1.3 from January 2011 to March 2011, according to the U.S. Business Census. Unwanted inventory is still costing individual companies millions of dollars and billions of dollars to the industry as a whole.
Dead inventory not only hurts the 230,000 companies comprising the manufacturing sector, but also the aggregate economy. The forgone spending and higher overhead costs associated with inventory means less consumption by consumers and more pressure to cost-cut for companies. While firms scramble to offload inventory by going through liquidators or throwing it away, Dimventory allows companies to “upload” their inventory and potentially gain more profit.
